View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you install the Microsoft Firewall client for ISA Server on either a Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer, you find that the following options are not available:
  • Automatically Detect ISA Server
  • Forefront Threat Management Gateway, Medium Business Edition
  • Windows Essential Business Server 2008
This behavior occurs even though you have enabled Automatic Discovery on the server and restart the server.

Cause

This behavior occurs because Winsock Proxy Autodetect (WSPAD) relies upon DNS for the transfer of information. However, if DNS fails, client computers that support remoting of Winsock calls can still use WSPAD. Because Windows 95-based and Windows NT 4.0-based workstation clients do not support remoting of Winsock calls, the Automatically Detect ISA Server, Forefront Threat Management Gateway, Medium Business Edition, and Windows Essential Business Server 2008 options are unavailable.

Status

This behavior is by design.

More information

The Automatically Detect ISA Server, Forefront Threat Management Gateway, Medium Business Edition, and Windows Essential Business Server 2008 options are available to Microsoft Windows 98-based and Microsoft Windows 2000-based clients because remoting is supported on these Windows operating systems.
