Default user may not be selected when logging on with fingerprint on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 system.
  • You use a fingerprint reader to log on to the system.

Rarely, when using the Microsoft biometric credential provider with a fingerprint reader, the logon screen when unlocking the system may not display the previously logged on user by default.

A back arrow is displayed, but no user is selected.

Cause

A race condition in the credential provider causes the logon screen to be displayed before the default user has been selected by the credential provider.

Resolution

The fingerprint reader will still work for logon.

Alternately, the user may select the back button and then select their user account and type their password manually.

More Information

This is a known issue, and may be addressed in a future Windows release. This is a cosmetic issue, as the user is able to logon successfully.

There is a related issue, KB 2826795, which addresses a similar race condition in the credential framework which results in a black screen hang. That hotfix is included in the May 2013 GDR rollup as well.

The May 2013 Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 update rollup is available from Windows Update or the following link:
