Unable to PXE boot X86 UEFI-based system


Symptoms

When trying to PXE boot a x86 UEFI-based system, you may encounter one of the following symptoms

  • System may obtain an IP address but do not complete the PXE boot process.
  • System may attempt to PXE boot but returns to the BIOS boot options.
  • Various PXE boot errors (Depending on the exact hardware).

Cause

This can occur if the Windows Deployment Services Server is running the following operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

Resolution

Update the Windows Deployment Services (WDS) server to Windows Server 2012 and make sure you add a Windows 8 x86 boot.wim.
