Compass applications may not function properly in Windows 8

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows 8 PC.
  • You install a 3rd party application that uses the compass sensor in Windows 8.

After the compass application installs, you notice that the application does not work as expected.

Cause

The compass application does not work because the compass sensor needs to be manually calibrated for the first time in order for the application to function properly. Before the compass sensor has been calibrated, the heading data in the application may not be populated.

Resolution

Windows 8 does not provide a mechanism to allow a user to calibrate the magnetometer to obtain a compass heading. You will need to manually calibrate this by performing a figure-8 motion calibration.
