DVD playback may hang when Windows Media Center is full screen on a secondary display

View products that this article applies to.

Summary

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have two or more displays connected to a Windows 7 PC and have chosen to "Extend these displays" in the Control Panel Display settings.
  • A 3rd-party DVD playback application is being used on the primary display to play a DVD.
  • While the DVD is playing on the primary display, Windows Media Center is launched and then moved to a display other than the primary display.

In this scenario, the 3rd-party application that was being used for DVD playback may hang.

More Information

Windows Media Center runs in DirectX exclusive mode when in full screen. This may sometimes cause problems for other 3rd-party video applications in a multiple display configuration.

To work around this issue, try using one of the following steps below:
  1. When the 3rd-party DVD playback application hangs, exit Windows Media Center out of full screen so that it is running in a window. This should resume DVD playback within the 3rd-party application.
  2. Use Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center to play the DVD.
