Startup logo animation is distorted horizontally when a Windows 10 or Windows 8 computer resumes from hibernation after a monitor port change

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When a Windows 10-based or Windows 8-based computer resumes from hibernation, the startup logo or splash screen on an external monitor is distorted horizontally if the monitor has an aspect ration of 16:9 or 16:10. This behavior may occur if either of the following conditions is true:

  • You change the VGA or DBI connection between the computer and the external monitor while the computer is hibernating. For example, you change the monitor connection from a VGA port to a DVI port, or from a DVI port on an add-on video card to a DVI port on an internal video card.
  • You connect the external monitor through a Display Port (DP) or HDMI connection before you hibernate the computer.

This behavior does not occur if you restart the computer.

Cause

This behavior occurs because the computer does not immediately recognize the monitor's properties when it resumes from hibernation. The computer forces a 4:3 resolution (1280x1024) temporarily until it identifies the monitor's aspect ratio. The temporary aspect ratio distorts the splash screen or OEM startup animation.

Status

This behavior is expected. The temporary distortion is only cosmetic and does not affect system stability.
