A Stop Error 0x000000C2 in the Srv2.sys file may occur and SMB clients cannot obtain data from the SMB 2 server in a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 environment

Symptoms

Assume that you have a Windows 7-based or on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that is running the Server Message Block version 2 (SMB 2) protocol and that has remote clients. In this scenario, a Stop error 0x000000C2 in the Srv2.sys file may occur. Additionally, the SMB clients cannot obtain data from the SMB 2 server.

Cause

This problem occurs because the function that returns keys to access an internal database that contains file IDs starts returning bad keys.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
