When you download a file from the Internet, for example, a .zip or .doc file, you may not be prompted with either an Open or Save As dialog box. To enable the Open or Save As features, you must set the properties on the File Types tab, and then click to select the Confirm Open After Download check box.

For Windows NT 4.0

  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. On the View menu, click Options.
  3. Click the File Types tab, click the file type that you want to view, and then click Edit.
  4. Click to select the Confirm Open After Download check box.
  5. Click OK.

For Windows 2000

  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. Click the File Types tab, click the file type that you want to view, and then click Advanced.
  4. Click to select the Confirm Open After Download check box.
  5. Click OK.
NOTE: You must perform the preceding steps to enable this feature for each file type.

Some of the Microsoft Office file extensions are:
  • Word is .doc
  • Excel is .xls
  • PowerPoint is .ppt
  • Access is .mdb
