Desktop wallpaper may be distorted on secondary display when resuming from sleep (S3) on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
  • There is a secondary display connected to an available port (i.e. VGA, DP, or HDMI.)
  • The desktop display is set to extend across the additional display.
  • You put the computer to sleep (S3) and then resume from sleep (S3.)
In this scenario, when resuming the computer from sleep, sometimes the desktop wallpaper may be distorted on the secondary display.

Cause

This is a timing issue, when encountered will prevent the desktop wallpaper from filling the screen properly.

Resolution

To work around this issue, use one of the following options:
  • Disconnect and reconnect the secondary display.
  • Use the Windows Key + P to set the display option to PC screen only and then use the Windows Key + P to set the display back to Extend.
  • Right-click on the Desktop and select Screen resolution, then click the drop down next to Multiple displays and select Show desktop only on 1 and click Apply when prompted to Keep changes or Revert select Revert and then click Cancel.
