Lock screen may briefly flicker or display a dark line when resuming from sleep on Windows 8

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer running Windows 8.
  • The computer is configured to display the Lock Screen on boot.
  • You place the computer into sleep (S3) and then later resume the computer from S3.
When resuming from S3 you may notice that sometimes the Lock Screen may briefly flicker or a dark horizontal line is displayed across the middle of the screen.

Cause

This is a timing issue. When encountered, it causes the Lock Screen to overlap during the drawing of the display.
