Pause button with the Music app may not pause music playback on Windows 8

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows 8 system.
  • You have version 1.1.144.0 of the Music app installed from the Microsoft Store.
  • From File Explorer, you double click on a music file to open up the Music app.
  • Music playback starts as expected.

When you click the Pause button to pause music playback, the button will now show Play to indicate that music was paused. If you click the Play button again, another stream of the music starts to play.

Cause

When the system is under stress resulting in high disk usage, this can cause a duplicate stream of the playback to occur.

Workaround

A fix for this issue was been released by Microsoft, install version 1.3.59.0 of the Music app from the Microsoft Store.
