Desktop background displays black intermittently when using Alt+Tab to switch between Windows 8 Store Application and desktop

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • A computer running Windows 8.
  • Windows 8 Store Application currently running.
  • Using Alt+Tab to switch between Windows 8 Store Application and desktop.
In this scenario, you may notice that the desktop background is black instead of the currently selected background image. Also, a portion of the correct background image is displayed as a thin bar at the top of the screen.

Cause

This is a timing issue, which when hit will prevent the proper wallpaper from being drawn and utilizes the system default background of black.

Resolution

Use one of the following options to work around this issue:
  • Press Alt+Tab to switch between the Windows 8 Store Application and desktop again.
  • Right-Clickon the desktop and select Refresh.
  • Press the F5 function key to refresh the desktop.
