View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer or device running Windows 8
  • You are listening to audio using the Windows 8 Store Music App
  • The computer is either entering into or resuming from sleep or hibernation while the Music app is playing
In this scenario, when the system enters into or resumes from sleep or hibernation you may hear a crackling sound or audio anomaly.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Windows 8 Music app continues to play the audio file when the system enters into or resumes from sleep or hibernation. The initiation of the sleep/hibernation process causes CPU utilization to increase while Windows saves critical data prior to fully entering the sleep/hibernation state. During this period of increased CPU utilization, the audio playing in the Music app is deprioritized resulting in some of the streaming audio packets being dropped and causing the audio anomaly or crackling noise.

Resolution

To prevent this issue, stop or pause the Music app prior to shutting down or placing the computer into a sleep/hibernation state.
