Symptoms

When you open the Microsoft Store app on a new computer that has Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8.1, or Windows 8.1 Pro preinstalled by the OEM, you may expect to see specific apps from the OEM or apps that are suggested by the OEM. However, these apps are not present in the Microsoft Store.

Note You may want to first verify with your OEM that they have exclusive apps or suggested apps in the Microsoft Store.

Cause

Microsoft is aware of some circumstances that are not attributed to specific OEM computer models that can lead to this situation. The known causes are as follows:
  • You have added the Pro Pack or Media Center Pack to your edition of Windows, or you are no longer using the preinstalled version of Windows provided by your OEM. This is expected behavior.
  • You have completed the Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 initial Out-Of-Box Experience (OOBE) without connecting to the Internet, then manually connected to the Internet,, and then immediately opened the Microsoft Store app.
  • A unit is pulled for testing and the OOBE is completed without an Internet connection during the manufacturing process.

Resolution

Verify that you are using an OEM factory-installed version of Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, and that it has not been upgraded to a Pro Pack or Media Center Pack version of Windows. If you have added the Pro Pack or Media Center Pack, you have to reinstall the OEM copy of Windows that was included with your computer to see the OEM apps in the Microsoft Store.

If you have not added Windows 8.1 Pro Pack or Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack, you can resolve the issue by following these steps:
  1. Clear the Microsoft Store cache
    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
    2. Type cmd in the search box, and then right-click or press and hold Command Prompt.
    3. Tap or click Run as administrator.
    4. At the Command Prompt, run the wsreset.exe command.

Note After you run wsreset.exe, the Microsoft Store may be slower the first time that you run it because the cache has to be rebuilt.
  2. Reset Windows activation

In the same elevated Command Prompt that you used to clear the Microsoft Store cache, run the following command:
    slmgr /rearm
  3. Reactivate Windows 8

Restart the computer. It should activate automatically if you are connected to the Internet. If the Internet is not available, you can activate by telephone.
  4. Verify that the device is activated
    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
    2. Type System in the search box, and then select System.
    3. At the bottom of the System Properties window, find the Windows activation section. Confirm that Windows is activated.
