Some text in an XPS document is not searchable in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you run an application to convert a document to an XML Paper Specification (XPS) document on a computer that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012. In this situation, some text in the converted XPS document is not searchable.

Note The unsearchable text in the converted XPS document is in the device-independent bitmap (DIB) format.

Cause

This issue occurs because the graphics device interface (GDI) cannot handle the font simulations that the fonts require. Therefore, when a user requests bold text with a font that does not have bold type available, the GDI cannot continue the operation and the text is converted to the DIB format instead.

Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 file information notes
Important Windows 8 hotfixes and Windows Server 2012 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows 8" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 8" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

More Information

An XPS document is a document format that you can use to view, save, share, digitally sign, and protect your document's content. An XPS document is like to an electronic sheet of paper. You cannot change the content of a piece of paper after the paper has been printed, and you cannot edit the contents of an XPS document.

DIB is a format that is used to define device-independent bitmaps in various color resolutions. The main purpose of DIBs is to allow for bitmaps to be moved from one device to another. A DIB is an external format, compared to a device-dependent bitmap (DDB), which appears in the system as a bitmap object. A DIB is usually transported in metafiles, BMP files, and Windows Clipboard.
