Known issue

This hotfix adds an additional "%systemroot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\" entry to the Path environment variable. This may be a duplicate entry. If the Path environment variable becomes too long, some applications may fail when they read or change the variable. This issue can be resolved by deleting the duplicate entry from the Path environment variable.

Note The Path registry key is in the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Environment
There is now a script that can be used to address this known issue. This script is helpful to enterprises that want to automate this fix across a large number of systems. To access this script, see Script to check for duplicate paths in PATH environment variable.

This script was originally developed to check for and delete duplicate paths in the PATH system environment variable. These duplicate paths may be added by faulty software installers. Additionally, there's a known bug that's associated with update 2823180. This bug adds an extra instance of the following string to the PATH environment variable:

%systemroot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0

Therefore, the length of the PATH variable may be close to the 32,767-character limit. In some cases, applications that try to add more paths may fail. You can resolve this issue by deleting the duplicate entries from the PATH variable.
