XADM: Unable to Send Mail to Members That Have the Same Length DBCS Distinguished Name

Symptoms

If some members of a distribution list have distinguished names (also known as DNs) that are the same length and that include the Japanese-language double-byte character set (DBCS) characters, you may receive the following non-delivery report (NDR) when you send a message to the distribution list:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Subject
Sent: Sent_Date

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Member_DN_1
A configuration error in the recipient's e-mail system prevented delivery of this message. Two recipients are configured with the same e-mail adress. Contact your administrator.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Workaround

To work around this problem, use the single-byte character set (SBCS) for the logon name.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.
