COM-based application freezes on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Assume that you have a COM-based control object that provides a connection point container on a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer. Additionally, assume that you use a COM-based application to create a connection between the connection point of the control object and a sink object. In this situation, the application freezes for several minutes.

Cause

This issue occurs because the system blocks an execution of later threads when the total number of runnable threads reaches the maximum concurrency value.

Note Runnable threads are associated with the advanced local procedure call (ALPC) port.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
