Symptoms

When the Internet Mail Service starts, an unexpected Dr. Watson error may occur.

If the proper Microsoft Windows NT and Exchange Server symbols are installed, you see a debug call stack that is similar to the following:

Cause

This problem can occur because the Internet Mail Service stops responding if the X.400 proxy address is missing from the Internet Mail Service Administrator mailbox.

Workaround

To work around this problem, make sure that the Administrator mailbox has an X.400 proxy address on the E-mail Address tab.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5.
