Playing a video on Windows 8 in Windows Media Player or Windows 8 Store Video App may temporarily freeze while audio continues playing normally

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer running Windows 8.
  • You are playing a video file (i.e. MPEG\AVI) in Windows Media Player or Windows 8 Store Video App.
  • While the video file is playing, you disconnect and reconnect the secondary monitor to an available port (i.e. VGA, DP, or HDMI) or minimize and then maximize Windows Media Player / Windows 8 Store Video App.
In this scenario, one or more of the following may occur:
  • Video may display black for a short period of time when a secondary monitor is disconnected and reconnected.
  • The video playback freezes for a short period of time when playing a video in Windows Media Player / Windows 8 Store Video App.
  • The video playback freezes for a short period of time when the secondary monitor is disconnected and reconnected.
  • The video playback freezes for a short period of time when you minimize and then maximize Windows Media Player / Windows 8 Store Video App.
  • Audio playback is smooth and continues throughout the video display issues.
