More information

When you use the Migration wizard that is included with Exchange 2000, when you choose the type of migration, the Migrate from Microsoft Exchange 5.5 option is available. When you select this migration process, items are copied from a source system to a target system through the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI). Any settings that are not stored as objects that are available through MAPI are lost during migration. For this type of migration to be successful, you must set the following permissions:
  • To successfully bind to the Exchange 5.5 directory service and the information store, give the Administrator account Administrator rights over the Organization, Site, and Configuration containers. You must enter the account name and password, as well as the source server name on the Migration Destination window in the Migration wizard.
  • To successfully import directory information and mail data into Windows 2000 Active Directory and the Exchange 2000 information store, add the account that is used to run the Migration wizard to the Domain Administrators group and the Exchange Administrator group.
The Exchange 2000 Migration wizard requires that you have access to an Exchange 5.5 Administrator account to successfully complete a migration from an Exchange 5.5 organization to an Exchange 2000 organization. The Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 migration process does not only bind to the Exchange 5.5 directory. The credentials are also used to log on to the Exchange 5.5 information store.

If the Migration Wizard does not have access to an Exchange 5.5 Administrator account, you may see the following errors in the application event log:
