Symptoms

An upgrade of Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 3 (SP3) to Exchange 2000 Server may stop working, and you may receive the following error message:
Setup failed while installing sub-component SMTP Service with error code 0x80005000 (please consult the installation logs for a detailed descriptio). You may cancel the installation or try the failed step again.

Cause

This problem can occur because the installation stops working during the upgrade of the Internet Mail Service. After the installation stops working, you need to totally remove the Exchange 2000 upgrade that stopped working, reinstall Exchange Server 5.5, and then restore from backups.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

IMPORTANT: Obtain the Service Pack and replace the Imcupg.dll file for the installation with the one from the service pack before you perform the upgrade.

Workaround

To work around this problem, remove the Internet Mail Connector (IMC) before you perform the upgrade.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.
