Media Engine instances are muted when you disable "Play sounds in webpages" in Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8

Symptoms

Assume that you use Internet Explorer 10 on a device that is running Windows 8. On the Advanced tab of the Internet Options dialog box, you clear the Play sounds in webpages option. In this situation, all instances of the Media Engine that were created by the browser and the Wwahost.exe process are muted.

For example, you play a media file by using a Windows store media app, such as Xbox Music or Pandora Music. In this situation, the audio output becomes unavailable.

Resolution

Security update information

To resolve this issue, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To do this, go to the following Microsoft website:
http://update.microsoft.com
