Inconsistent results may be seen when using boot performance assessments in the Windows 8 ADK

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK), which includes the Windows Assessment Toolkit, installed on a Windows 8 PC.
  • From the ADK, you launch the Windows Assessment Console and execute the Boot Performance (Fast Startup) assessment.
  • The purpose of the assessment may include measuring boot performance against a driver that is being tested.

In this scenario, you may notice different timing results after each reboot of the system. You may also notice that the I/O size is greater than the threshold in one test run but lesser in another test run, which could result in conflicting assessment results.

Cause

When a system is rebooted, drivers and applications may not load in the same memory allocations as in previous boots which may result in different driver testing behavior. For example, an EXE or DLL may not be loaded into memory at the exact same time as the previous boot. This delay can result in a different memory allocation.

Resolution

This behavior is by design.
