Folder Redirection policy is not applied to a network share after you update a Group Policy in Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You successfully redirect the Documents folder of a user to a network share. To do this, you deploy a Group Policy Object on a computer that is running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
  • You configure the following Group Policy setting on the computer:
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\Verify old and new folder redirection targets point to the same share before redirecting
  • You change the path of the target folder in the folder redirection policy to a new path that points to the same network share. For example, you change \\machine-alias1\Docs to \\machine-alias2\Docs, and both paths point to "\\machine\Docs."
  • You restart the computer to apply the Group Policy.
In this scenario, the event log indicates that the folder redirection policy was applied successfully. However, the Documents folder is not redirected to the new path that points to the network share. Additionally, one of the following registry locations (depending on whether FR was configured for User or Computer policy) is not updated:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell FoldersHKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Additionally, the following event that reports that you redirected the folder to the network share is logged in the Event Viewer:

Note When the paths point to different network shares, you do not have to configure the "Verify old and new…" policy setting. When the paths point to the same network share, and you do not enable the policy setting, data that is contained in the redirected folders is deleted.

Cause

This issue occurs because the path of the redirection policy that you changed is not updated in the registry.

Resolution

Hotfix information

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes
