System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager SP1 fails to shut down a virtual machine

Symptoms

After adding a host or a cluster to System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager SP1 (VMM), attempting to shut down the virtual machines on the newly added host or cluster fails. Right clicking on the virtual machine and selecting Shut Down does not shut down the virtual machine although it is possible to do so from the Hyper-V console.

Cause

VMM does not know about the guest operating system of the virtual machine until the first full virtual machine refresh is completed, which might take up to 24 hours after the host or cluster was added to VMM.

Resolution

Either wait until the first full virtual machine refresh is complete or do a host or cluster refresh manually. After either of these options are completed, VMM should possess the information about the guest operating system of the virtual machine, thus enabling VMM to shut down the selected virtual machine.
