System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager SP1 cannot increase the number of CPU Cores during a P2V conversion


Symptoms

When using the P2V wizard in System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager SP1 to convert a physical machine into a virtual machine, there is no ability to increase the number of CPU cores (e.g. from 2 to 4 cores) for the virtual machine in the P2V wizard.

Cause

This is by design.

Resolution

The number of CPU cores of the virtual machine can be increased after the conversion process is complete. To do so, follow the steps below:

1. Ensure that the virtual machine is in Stopped state

2. Right click on the virtual machine and select Properties

3. Select the Hardware Configuration tab

4. Click on Processor option and select the desired number of cores under Number of Processors

5. Click OK button
