Wireless devices are enabled after you turn on Airplane mode in Windows 8

Symptoms

Assume that you turn on Airplane mode by using the slider switch on a computer that is running Windows 8. When you start an application that enables wireless communication such as Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, GPS, or Bluetooth, wireless devices are enabled unexpectedly.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Airplane mode slider switch controls only the software radio control on the computer. Therefore, applications can enable wireless communication after you turn on Airplane mode by using the slider switch.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use the Settings menu to disable all wireless devices. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.
  2. Tap or click Wireless.
  3. Under Wireless devices, make sure that all the wireless devices are turned off.
