Symptoms

When you try to install x86-based slipstream installation media for SQL Server 2012 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system in WoW64 mode, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

SQL Server Setup is not supported in WOW64. This setup program can be run only on a 32-bit system.

Note All localized SQL Server 2012 SP1 slipstream and ISO packages are unaffected by this issue when they are installed on native architecture systems, for example installing x86-based media on a 32-bit version of Windows, or installing x64-based media on a 64-bit version of Windows.

Workaround

To work around this issue, install the RTM version of your desired x86-based SQL Server installation media, and then upgrade to the SP1 version by applying the x86-based SQL Server 2012 SP1 update on the 64-bit version of Windows in WoW64 mode.

Update The products that are listed in the "Introduction" section were refreshed on January 4, 2012. The refreshed builds do not exhibit the problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section.
