A compatibility update for the legacy upgrade experience is available. This update improves the legacy upgrade experience when you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 8. This compatibility update is dated March 2013.

How to obtain this update

By default, this compatibility update is offered when you have the release version of Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012. No interaction is required to apply this update.

Upgrade actions

This compatibility update may trigger several actions when you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 8. The following are the most common actions that may occur:
  • Upgrade block

    Puts an upgrade block on an application that may cause the upgrade to Windows 8 to fail. Windows 8 may put an upgrade block on a third-party application only if the manufacturer is notified. User has to uninstall to continue with the upgrade.
  • Reinstall after upgrade

    The user can continue to upgrade. However, the application or driver works if a user reinstalls after the upgrade.
