No integrated touch functionality after you install an OEM or System Builder version of Windows 8

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Windows 8 on a computer that has an integrated touch digitizer.
  • The integrated touch digitizer is not logo certified for Windows 8.
  • You activate Windows 8 by using a System Builder product key or an OEM product key.
In this scenario, the touch functionality of the digitizer is disabled. Additionally, the disabled touch device does not appear in Device Manager.

Note This issue does not occur with pen input or external touch devices, such as external touch monitors.

Cause

This issue occurs because manufacturers of PCs which use integrated touch digitizers are required to use logo certified hardware in Windows 8 to enable touch functionality. This requirement is enforced with a cryptographic hardware signature, and is for all OEM and System Builder versions of Windows 8.

Workaround

If you want to upgrade a Windows 7 computer that has integrated touch, you should upgrade Windows by using a retail or volume license version of Windows 8. These versions of Windows 8 allow touch functionality to be maintained if the manufacturer provides the necessary driver and device support.

How to check whether an OEM or System Builder version of Windows 8 is installed

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  2. In the search box, type Computer.
  3. Swipe across or right-click Computer, and then tap or click Properties.
  4. View the 20-digit product ID that is displayed in the "Product ID" field. If the last three digits are OEM, then Windows 8 was activated by using an OEM or System Builder product key.

How to check whether integrated touch support is disabled

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  2. In the search box, type Computer.
  3. Swipe across or right-click Computer, and then tap or click Properties.
  4. View the value in the "Pen and Touch" field. If integrated touch support is disabled, the value resembles one of the following:
    • No Pen or Touch Input is available for this Display
    • Pen Support

      Note This value is displayed if pen input is still available.
