UMBs for MS-DOS-based applications are no longer available after you install security update 2724197 or hotfix 2732488 on a computer that is running Windows XP SP3 or Windows Server 2003 SP2

Symptoms

Assume that you perform one of the following operations:
  • You install the security update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article�2724197, which is documented in security bulletin MS12-068, on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).�
  • You install either security update�2724197 or the hotfix that is described in KB 2732488 on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).
In this situation, the upper memory blocks (UMBs) for MS-DOS-based applications become unavailable.

Notes
  • The UMBs are available before you perform the operation.
  • You can run the MEM /C�command to display information about the UMBs.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix Download Available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
