XADM: Chinese Subject Is Displayed as Question Mark in Exchange 2000 Newsgroup

When you use a news client such as Microsoft Outlook Express to post a Chinese-language article to a newsgroup that is based in the Exchange 2000 Server Public Folders/Internet Newsgroups folder, the Chinese-language subject is displayed as question marks (???) in the article list. If you double-click the article to open it, both the subject and content are displayed correctly.

This problem occurs because Outlook Express uses the XOVER command to obtain the header information of all of the articles in a newsgroup. The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service incorrectly converts the data that is retrieved from the information store when NNTP returns that data to the user.

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.

This problem does not occur only with the Chinese language; any double-byte character set (DBCS) characters in the subject, such as Japanese-language or Korean-language characters, are displayed as question marks.
