Data is corrupted when there is insufficient memory on a Windows-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you run some Winsock applications on a Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012-based computer. When the computer has insufficient memory resources, the same data is received by the Winsock applications two times. This leads to data corruption.

Cause

This issue occurs because the system does not update the TCP receive window with the partly buffered data. When the computer has insufficient memory resources, the system successfully buffers only part of the data and then discards the rest. Therefore, data corruption occurs.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. To request the hotfix package that applies to one of the operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM,SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
    VersionProductMilestoneService branch
    6.0.600 2.22xxxWindows Server 2008SP2LDR
    6.1.760 0.21xxxWindows Server 2008 R2RTMLDR
    6.1.760 1.22xxxWindows Server 2008 R2SP1LDR
