The On-Screen Keyboard may not launch right away when you access it at the Windows 8 and Server 2012 password screen

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.
  • When you are at the password creation screen, immediately click the Ease of Access menu from the bottom left hand corner.
  • Click the On-Screen Keyboard to launch it.
After you click the On-Screen Keyboard, the keyboard may be not be displayed immediately.

Cause

The On-Screen Keyboard may not be fully initialized yet when you attempt to launch it immediately after the initial installation.

Resolution

Wait about 20 seconds before launching the On-Screen Keyboard when you are at the password creation screen. Note that this delay occurs only when you attempt to launch the On-Screen Keyboard very quickly during the first boot of Windows.
