Webpage takes longer than expected to load in Internet Explorer 9 on a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have Windows Internet Explorer 9 installed on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You configure Internet Explorer to use an automatic configuration script. To do this, you follow these steps:
    • In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.
    • Select the Use automatic configuration scriptcheck box, and then type the location of the proxy auto-config (PAC) file in theAddress text box.
  • You clear the Automatically detect settings check box.
  • You configure multiple proxies in the PAC file. For example, you edit the PAC file content as follows:
    function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
    {
         return "PROXY proxy1:80; PROXY proxy2:80";
    }
  • The first proxy in the list becomes unreachable or does not exist.
  • You try to browse a webpage.
In this scenario, it takes longer than expected to load the webpage.

Cause

This issue occurs because Internet Explorer 9 takes a long time to complete a proxy failover. After the unreachable proxy is detected, Internet Explorer still tries to use the proxy.
