Invalid parameter error when formatting BD-R discs in Windows explorer on Windows 8

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When using Windows Explorer to format a Blu-Ray disc by right-clicking on the drive and selecting the format option, the format fails and the user is presented with the following error message:

"An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function" or "Windows cannot finish formatting"

Cause

An IRP failed with C000000Dh because Storport failed the I/O request due to the IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT pointing to a buffer that is 2-byte aligned, but the relevant Device Object AlignmentMask says 4-byte alignment is needed. This is caused by the formatting program invoked by Windows Explorer which did not provide a buffer with the required alignment.

Resolution

This is a known issue that Microsoft is aware of; this KB will be updated when there is an available resolution from Microsoft.

Intel is also aware of this issue and has updated iaStorA.sys driver to require 2-byte alignment in order to work around the issue; it is recommended that you contact your OEM manufacturer to obtain the updated driver version 11.6.2.1002 for iaStorA.sys that provides this workaround.
