Windows 8 will not enter Airplane Mode with Bluetooth headset

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows 8 system and a Bluetooth headset.
  • You are listening to audio over the Bluetooth headset.
  • When you try to enable "Airplane Mode" through the Wireless menu under PC Settings, Windows 8 fails to go into "Airplane Mode."

Cause

On systems with a USB-based Bluetooth radio, the audio stack may have a handle open to the Bluetooth headset, preventing the headset from being disabled. This in turn will prevent the Bluetooth radio from being disabled.

Resolution

Stop the audio playback and disconnect or power off the Bluetooth headset before attempting to enable "Airplane Mode".
