"0x800704C9" error when you copy files to an NFS server from a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based NFS client after the server is restarted

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Network File System (NFS) client that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You copy files to an NFS server.
  • The NFS server or the NFS service is restarted.
  • You try to copy files to the NFS server again.
In this scenario, you cannot copy the files. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file.
If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.
Error 0x800704C9: The remote computer refused the network connection.

Cause

The issue occurs because the portmapper service changes the port number of the NFS lock manager service (nlockmgr) after the NFS server is restarted. However, Windows 7-based and Windows Server 2008 R2-based NFS clients cache the original port number that was used to communicate with nlockmgr. The NFS client will try to use the cached port number until the NFS client service is restarted.
