Personal templates that are created by using File Export are not listed in the available templates of an Office 2013 program

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You create a personal template in an Office 2013 program by following these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Export.
  2. Click Change File Type, select Template from the file types, and then click Save As to save the template.

Note In Project 2013, click Save Project as File, select Project Template or Project 2007 Template from the template types, and then click Save As to save the template.
In this scenario, when you click New on the File menu, you cannot find the Personal tab. Or, the personal template is not listed on the Personal tab.

Cause

This issue occurs because the file location where the personal template is saved when you export differs from the default location of personal templates in the Office 2013 program. When you use export to save a personal template, the template is saved to the default local file location, such as C:\Users\<user name>\Documents. However, the Office 2013 program locates personal templates in the default personal templates location. Therefore, the personal template cannot be found and is not listed.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • On the File menu, click Save instead of Export to create personal templates. In the Save As dialog box, when you select a template in the Save as type combo box, the default file location is set to the default personal templates location automatically.

Note In PowerPoint 2013, Project 2013 and Visio 2013, you must set the default personal templates location before you use File Save to save the template. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the File menu, click Options.
    2. In the Options dialog box, click Save.
    3. In the Default personal templates location box, set a file location, and then click OK.
  • Move your personal templates to the default personal templates location.
  • Change the default personal templates location to where your personal templates are saved.

  • Microsoft Excel 2013
In Microsoft PowerPoint 2013, this folder is created automatically, but the default personal templates location is not set.
