"Unable to refresh data for a data connection in the workbook" error when you try to refresh an Excel 2013 workbook in PowerPivot Gallery in SharePoint Server 2010

Symptoms

When you try to manually refresh an Excel 2013 workbook that is stored in PowerPivot Gallery on a Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 server, you receive the following error message:
Unable to refresh data for a data connection in the workbook. Try again or contact your system administrator. The following connections failed to refresh: ThisWorkbookDataModel

Cause

This issue occurs because the Excel 2013 workbook contains upgraded data models that cannot be scheduled for a data refresh in PowerPivot Gallery in SharePoint Server 2010.

Workaround

To work around this issue, upgrade SharePoint Server 2010 to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013. You can refresh the Excel 2013 workbook correctly in PowerPivot Gallery in SharePoint Server 2013.
