View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer running Windows 8.
  • You connect a USB Removable Storage device to the computer.
  • From within an Explorer window, you right-click on the device or driver letter and select Eject.

In this scenario, after selecting Eject you will see a “Safe to Remove Hardware” balloon notification appear in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. If you then click on the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the System Tray, you will see an entry of "..." in place of the USB Removable Storage device that was ejected.

More Information

This issue occurs only when ejecting the device from an Explorer window. In general, this does not indicate a problem with the device or system. The item will remain until the device is physically removed from the USB port. Alternately, you can open the Devices and Printers window, find the USB storage device that was ejected, right-click on it and choose "Remove Device".
