Symptoms

Assume that you have Microsoft Narrator enabled on a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has Windows Search disabled. However, when you try to access the Start menu or open Windows Explorer, Narrator crashes.

Cause

This issue occurs because a null reference exception is unhandled. Narrator calls a handler when Narrator processes items in an internal queue. The handler tries to call the Stop method on a timer reference. However, the timer object is created only when Windows Search is enabled on the computer. Therefore, the timer reference points to a null object, and then Narrator throws an exception.
