Symptoms

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may not start and your computer may log the following error messages:
EVENT ID 1118
Error 0x80004005 reading configuration information from registry for Key system\Currentcontrolset\Services\Msexchangels\
Parameterssystem

EVENT ID 5000
Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. Error 0x80004005.

EVENT ID 1005
Unexpected error 0xc0040000 - The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available. Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance. Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store ID no: 8004011d-0526-00000000 occurred.

Cause

This behavior may occur because the maximum size of the registry is set to less than or equal to the actual registry size.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, you must follow these steps:
  1. Right-click My Computer and click Properties.
  2. Click the Performance tab.
  3. In the Virtual Memory section, click Change.
  4. Set the maximum registry size to a larger size than what the registry currently displays on the screen.

    NOTE: The default registry size of Microsoft Small Business Server is 50 MB.
