Internet Explorer 5.5 Browser Window Closes When You Click a Link to Download Files

Symptoms

In Internet Explorer 5.5, when you try to download a file from the Internet, the download may start, but the browser window may then close.

Cause

This problem can occur under either of the following conditions while you are using Internet Explorer:
  • You right-click a link to download a file, and then click Open in New Window.
  • A new window opens automatically because of the code on the Web site.

Workaround

To work around this issue, right-click the link that starts the download, and then click Save Target As.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem can also occur with certain other content that opens in other programs, such as media files that open with Microsoft Windows Media Player.
