XCLN: Sent Messages Remain in Outbox for Longer Than Expected

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you send a message from an e-mail client that is configured to use a personal folder store, the message is sent almost immediately, but a copy of the message remains in your Outbox for 15 seconds or longer.

Note that this behavior does not affect your ability to send messages from an e-mail client through an Exchange 2000 server. It only affects the amount of time for which messages remain in your Outbox after they are sent.

Cause

Exchange 2000 Server attempts to minimize network traffic by delaying the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) notifications that are sent to e-mail clients, such as the notification that is sent to delete messages from your Outbox. Delaying UDP notifications allows the server to combine similar notifications into a single UDP transfer, thereby reducing the total number of transfers between the server and the e-mail client. While this behavior reduces the overall amount of traffic on the network, it may be perceived as a performance problem in the e-mail client.
