Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a laptop that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You set the When I close the lid setting to Do nothing on the laptop.
  • When the laptop starts to enter sleep mode (system power state S3), you close the lid before the laptop enters to the sleep mode.
  • You open the lid and resume the laptop from the sleep mode.
In this scenario, the screen brightness of the screen is brighter or dimmer than before. Additionally, you cannot adjust the brightness on the laptop.

Note This issue is resolved temporarily after you close the lid again and reopen it.

Cause

This issue occurs because the device stack for the monitor is not torn down when the laptop enters sleep mode. When the laptop is resumed from sleep mode, enumeration occurs before Plug and Play (PnP) manager starts the tear down the previous stack. Therefore, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) cannot create a filter for the new instance of the monitor.
