Heap corruption occurs in the Svchost.exe process in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, heap corruption randomly occurs in the Svchost.exe process. This heap corruption causes a critical exception together with the following error code:
STATUS_HEAP_CORRUPTION (0xC0000374)
Notes
  • The stack dump file that is generated when this issue occurs indicates possible heap corruption in the following location:
    sspicli!DisconnectRpcConnection+0x23
  • The service that fails when this issue occurs may restart automatically. Therefore, you may not notice the failure itself. You may only notice that a new application dump file is created.

Cause

This issue may occur if the Wired AutoConfig service or the Remote Access Connection Manager service calls the RasEapInitialize method in two threads at the same time.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
