Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based Remote Desktop Services server freezes when you try to log on to or log off the server by using a smart card

Assume that you have a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has the Remote Desktop Services role installed. When you try to log on to the computer by using a smart card, or you try to log off the computer that uses smart card authentication, the computer freezes intermittently.

Note This issue can also occur on a computer that is running Windows 7 and that has the Remote Server Administration Tools feature installed.

This issue is caused by an error that occurs when the certificate propagation service adds a specified session to the global session. The certificate propagation service is applied when a user who is logged on�inserts a smart card into the computer. In some cases, the session ID that is requested to be added to the internally maintained list clashes with some session IDs that�were generated earlier. When this issue occurs, the�SESSION_LIST_NODE�function assumes that some errors have occurred, and the node that was just created should be deleted. Then, the�SESSION_LIST_NODE�function starts to delete the path. However, the head pointer of the node is not created yet, and the�SESSION_LIST_NODE�function is pointed to some nodes in the global session list. Therefore, all the paths of the previous nodes are deleted.
