"The Specified port is unknown" error message when you use GPP to deploy printers to a computer that is running Windows

Symptoms

When you use Group Policy Preferences (GPP) to deploy printers to a client computer that is running Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2), the deployment fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The specified port is unknown (0x80070704 or 0x704)


Note You also receive the error message when you try to manually connect the printers to the computer.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
